Wonderful essay.

I think of the small things cities can do with modest expense. Tiny examples of the free in freedom, like bland blank spaces somehow created by anomalies of street and building design way back when, now turned into fun destinations with benches and planters and sculpture and murals, maybe a pop up cafe or a food truck or both, where anyone is welcome to just come and hang.

When its leaders do little things like that with their budgets, cities become places of hope and celebration.

Mamdani has proven a master at setting expectations. But now comes what I call the boring implementation details. My hope (which he has explicitly encouraged) is he'll follow the FDR model of try anything and see what works. Sounds simple until you realize how much work and humility "seeing what works" takes. But if it can be done Mamdani's the guy to do it.
