Let the record show 2 marks for ‘this really happened’.

Thanks. It’s really like that, isn’t it. We were all watching it but we can’t be sure, because if it had happened, wouldn’t somebody have done something about it?

I tried, but turns out I didn't have standing, due to all their lying.

If only we could all just sit together...

And another thing... the vast majority of American voters have no idea how our criminal justice system actually works. I've found Terri Kanefield very helpful on laying out the processes and realities of how they work. When you ask who "somebody" is, and what "something" looks like, the answer boils down to "without the co-operation and support of a significant percentage of the Republican party, it ain't happning". Its the Republican party who will keep him on deck in the coming storm. I'm hoping some writers will wrestle with the question of what the Democratic party should do in the 2 areas of working within the givernment and running for office (and spare me the pablum of the Trans Menance and economic anxiety). Adam Silverman at Balloon Juice has been banging his counter-insurgency drum for a while, and I think its gonna take that drastic a change in mindset to deal with Trump and the Republican party.

Your average American voter, if he noticed it at all, believes its all gummint theater, with no effect on their lives. We do have mechanisms for dealing with it, but they require both political parties to value the rule of law over a short-term benefit. Another norm sailing off in the distance. This shall be my Hobby Horse, Trump is a loose cannon, but the Republican party is keeping him untethered on deck.

Very well said. The understated tone really works here -- paradoxically, it reminds us of the expanse and heinousness of Trump's crimes.

I still can't believe he got away/is going to get away with all that. Totally agree with your closing paragraph.
