Americans don't seem to be motivated to get up off their couches by ideology, or even ideas. Asking them to protest in the name of a President most of them don't remember is a heavy lift. If your focus is motivating apathetic Americans with ideals, you're gonna need a real good argument no one has come up with yet. The Capra appeals to American ideals got buried in the desert sometime in the 50's, idealism is a niche luxury these days. Most Americans don't want to be inspired, they want to be comforted.

Jeez, I'm yelling at clouds. I didn't think that was going to happen.

Sorry, not my intent. People being all up in arms over typical Trump trash talk as if it had meaning in the words is just getting to me. Carter deserves a funeral procession like Lincoln's, but the independent voters of this country won't bother.

Not something you did on purpose but made me realize how old I am. To most Americans Carter is as remote as Truman.

I wouldn't mind so much their inability to rise from the couch, if they could show the least ability to actually think in a seated position. the contemporary political cartoon of the typical voter personified as a toilet while the tv is shown as a large ass in the process od defecation is painfully accurate.

I remember the Carter years somewhat imperfectly, as I had recently begun residence in an extremely rural and conservative county by the West Virginia border. without a car, the gas problem passed me by, and television was not an option for me either. but even in my remote fastness, I was well aware of the incipient horrors of the coming Reagan years, and our descent into the ignorant slavish devotion to hate radio.

how quaint to recall the criticism Carter endured by his admission (in Playboy, I believe) of having sinned in having possibly adulterous notions, not by overt action, but by having been tempted in his mind.

"Vote Jimmy! Vote Jimmy!"

I went to the Mall yesterday to see what's up at the Capitol. Not much if you don't count the miles of fencing west all the way past the Art Museum (closed anyway because weather). It's there for a couple weeks to come (til past the 20th). So I could not get close to the place where I watched American democracy commit suicide 4 years ago.

All that to say that on the way there I exited Union Station and walked across Columbus Circle, with its 50+ flags round the border. All at half-staff. Was the most moving thing I witnessed yesterday.
